The American people came out en masse and successfully voted to keep the fascistic Trump regime at bay for now. The Party of Communists USA (PCUSA), congratulates the progressive and working class voters that took back Congress and local governments.
However, the danger of fascism is merely pushed aside for the time being. As long as capitalism exists, the threat of fascism always looms. The Democratic Party is beholden to capitalism and is therefore not equipped to vanquish this threat.
In the coming years, the American working class and its progressive allies have a large task ahead. As the Republican Party wanes in influence, Big Business may shift to a new party as its outlet for reaction.
Wall Street and the younger Silicon Valley sections of Capital (the billionaire oligarchs) will increase their efforts to crush labor, eliminate civil liberties, and ramp up their insatiable lust for war. They may attempt to preserve the fading Republican Party; they may seek refuge within the Corporate sections of the Democratic Party; they may shift to the reactionary Libertarian Party; or they may even seek to overthrow bourgeois democracy altogether in favor of a fascist dictatorship.
Whatever the case may be, the working class and its allies must remain vigilant and maintain their pressure to preserve America’s democratic institutions.
The working class has the following challenges ahead of itself:
- Increase the drive to unionize key industries
- Combat the forces that divide American workers by race, gender, and nationality
- Build a labor-led Anti-Monopoly Coalition to resist Big Business’ attempts to lower the standard of living by suppressing wages
- End imperialist wars
- Cut the bloated US military budget and move money into social programs such as single-payer health care, building new schools, building and repairing transportation infrastructure, and building new affordable housing
- Reverse Citizens United
- Shift power away from the Executive branch to the Legislative branch
- Abolish repressive apparatuses such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
- Reinforce the separation of State and Church
- Overturn Taft-Hartley Act
- Help build a third political party that is worker-led, following the footsteps of the Progressive Party of the 1940s
- Strengthen Affirmative Action policies to end discrimination in training, hiring, and promotion
- Struggle for women’s reproductive freedom, guaranteed maternity leave, and equal wages
The labor-led Anti-Monopoly Coalition is comprised of a broad formation of progressive elements united in their opposition to fascism which is “the open, terroristic dictatorship of the most
reactionary and most chauvinist elements of finance capital.” As Dimitrov said in 1935, on the subject of the Popular Front, “when the scattered proletarian detachments, at the initiative of the Communists, join hands for the struggle against the common enemy, when the working class, marching as a unit, begins to act together with the peasantry, the lower middle classes and all democratic elements, on the basis of the People’s Front program, then the offensive of the fascist bourgeoisie is confronted with an insurmountable barrier. A force arises which can offer determined resistance to fascism, prevent it from coming to power in countries of bourgeois democracy and overthrow its barbarous rule where it is already established.”
We call for the formation of a labor-led Anti-Monopoly Coalition as the specific form that the
Popular Front will take in the USA. This will be composed of all democratic and anti-imperialist forces, including the progressive elements of the labor movement, the anti-war/peace movements, local progressive forces, and emerging third party electoral formations which oppose US imperialism and monopoly capital. Communists in the United States must work together and help build a worker-led political party.
